PLANO, Texas, January 24, 2000 - Sterling Software,
Inc.’s (SSW-NYSE) Application Development Group today announced a worldwide
distribution agreement with BEA Systems, Inc. (BEAS-NASDAQ). This partnership enables
Sterling Software to market and support BEA Systems WebLogic Server for development use.
BEA WebLogic Server is an award-winning Java application server for building e-commerce
applications, and it will be used together with Sterling Software’s new Java
development environment, COOL:Joe. COOL:Joe is an integrated component architecture,
modeling and development environment that offers customers a way to develop distributed
applications using Java and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). "For today’s business, the ability to build reliable Java
applications quickly and easily is one of the keys to successful e-commerce," said
Joe Menard, president of the E-commerce Server Division at BEA Systems, Inc. "By
incorporating BEA WebLogic Server into their overall e-business solution for Java, and
leveraging BEA’s expertise in this area, Sterling Software is helping companies build
reliable, scalable e-commerce solutions that will help them serve the e-generation."
COOL:Joe uses advanced wizards to automate the development
effort, from transforming a component specification into a set of Java classes for
implementation, to creating and editing business logic, to testing and debugging, to
deploying EJBs. When a developer is ready to deploy an EJB to the WebLogic Server,
COOL:Joe’s Deployment wizard automatically runs the WebLogic deployment utilities,
making the deployment process fast and easy. COOL:Joe’s Test Harness wizard
automatically generates both an HTML/JSP user interface and a Java application user
interface for testing the EJB locally or remotely on the WebLogic Server. The interactive
debugger in COOL:Joe is integrated with an advanced editor for quickly identifying and
repairing code. The developers have the ability to write, test and deliver Java
applications in a complete environment with tools that work together seamlessly, while
being insulated from the complex technology required to build and deploy EJB components to
the WebLogic Server environment.
"We’re pleased to add BEA’s WebLogic Server to
our existing set of e-business application development solutions," said Mike Jones,
product line director, enterprise Java solutions at Sterling Software Application
Development Group. "The powerful combination of COOL:Joe for Java development and the
WebLogic Server for application deployment means our customers now have a seamless
solution for developing distributed e-business systems quickly."
